About Alleghany County
Alleghany County North Carolina is the fifth smallest county in land area in North Carolina (approximately 253 square miles) and the sixth smallest in population (approximately 10,700 residents). Sparta NC is the Alleghany County seat.
The Eastern Continental Divide runs through Alleghany County. Our mountains average between 2,500 and 3,800 feet in elevation. The highest peaks of 4,000 feet or more are found in the Peach Bottom Mountains in the middle of Alleghany County.
Two main water tributaries run through Alleghany County, the New River in the north and west and the Little River in the center and northeast. Both flow to the north into Virginia. 31 miles of the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway run through the county. The Blue Ridge Parkway’s largest recreational area, Doughton Park, is located here.
